The story of Michelangelo’s struggle to obey a pope and paint a fresco on a ceiling though he always considered himself a sculptor makes for a dramatic book. The author shares the story sequentially, as Michelangelo slowly makes his way across the ceiling, over a four year period, and intertwines this story with the story of the pope and his desire to keep France out of his realm.

The book is writen in a style that you need to know some of the art history. I read it for a beginning art history class and it was interesting to see the names of pieces we had just studied. There were also references Georgio Vassari's books. If you dont know that he was a biographer of artists you wouldnt know what was going on. I agree that some knoweldge of the time period helps immensely.
