Anna, you're going to hate me for only giving it 3 stars... but I don't know. After The Painted Veil and Up At the Villa, it just... didn't seem as enchanting. The protagonist (whose name escapes me) was too much of a Holden Caulfield "woe is I" character for me. Give me resilience rather than pity.

When I started this book, I thought I liked it. Now, I am about 1/2 way through, and I don't know. I find the constant whining about his disability a little hard to take. I have a disability as well, similar I would say to Philip Carey's. but if anything it has made me a whole lot stronger than I would have been without it.
I think what bothered me most about this book is Maugham's view of women. He only paints women in the worst way. I still didn't like Phillip Carey very much.
