I went into this book without reading any of the reviews, so I was pleasantly surprised what a wonderfully funny book this is.
Flora Poste is a well educated nineteen year old orphan, who has decided that she doesn't want to work. She wants to live with her relatives, and the only family that would take her were the Starkadders of Cold Comfort Farm, Howling, Sussex.

This one's not for me. Twee arch characters. A sort-of plot. Forced humour. Maybe in a different time it will have its moment.

For a satire written almost a century ago, it holds up remarkably well. Apparently, there are some truths that last a lot longer than you'd expect. I can see why this continues to be a classic.
Also, with all the talk about "There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort," no one can convince me G.R.R. Martin hasn't read this. ...more
