This book was beautifully written, but I don't think it moved fast enough. Everything really interesting happened in the last 50 or so pages. I felt like I was on a long car trip, and wanted to keep checking my watch to see how much longer til we get there.

Memories, time, friendship, family, like most human relations, make up very good material for any novel, as they are interesting for a broad range of readers and there are enough peculiarities to explore so that the subject is never exhausted. When you add up to this a gifted writer, you end up with a marvelous novel.
It's been awhile since I read this as a teenager, but I remember enjoying it greatly. Wonderful coming-of-age book.
