Probably more like a 3.5 - really stunning and unique, but the transitions were repetitive and got annoying. "I wouldn't have believed it if it weren't for what happened next..." I loved the roll out of information - not just the meaning of the role they were in, but also the secrets they kept from each other, the ways they lied to themselves and others to maintain some sanity. ...more

I found this a powerful novel although the "secret" at its heart is fairly evident from the start. I always love Ishiguro's prose and this book was no exception, even though I don't think it is one of his best. ...more

มีความรู้สึกแปลกๆ คือมันเล่าเรื่องแบบไม่ปูอะไรทั้งนั้น เล่าแบบไม่สนใจว่าคนอ่านจะรู้หรือเปล่าว่าอะไรคืออะไร แล้วก็เล่าแบบเป็นห้วงคำนึงนึกถึงสิ่งนี้แล้วทอดไปเรื่อยๆ (แต่เราจะไม่งงกับลำดับเวลาขนาดนั้น) แน่นอนว่าส่วนตัวก็พอโอเคกับการเล่าเรื่อง ชอบการบรรยายที่ให้เห็นบรรยากาศของสถานที่ซึ่งน่าจะสวยมากๆ

อย่างไรก็ตามการสรุปหนังสือด้วย genre อะไรก็ตามแต่ เป็นการลดคุณค่าของหนังสือไปมากทีเดียว คือไม่ต้องไปสนใจมันดีกว่า

One of those rare books that wins on both style and voice - Kathy H. seems so vivid and real. True art that entertains as well as it probes the nature of friendship and what it means to be human.
