This book grew on me. In the first few chapters I found it hard to get past the blokey-men's-magazine or story-over-a-few-beers style the author uses, the words he invents to suit his purposes (?hellacious?) and the inability to let the truth get in the way of a good story. However, as I progressed through the book I found a number of really interesting characters and ideas emerging as he tells of the initial injury that started the whole quest, and the downright weird but fascinating characters

Weirdly this book is one of the best evolution books I've read. The compelling sport story combines with the science to address the philosophical question of what it actually means to be human, but in such a subtle way that you never even realize that is the path you are running down until you arrive at the end.

I am not a runner, do not like running, and know nothing about running, so I cannot be a judge on whether or not the author's claims are true or a bunch of new hipster sports baloney, but this was a surprisingly interesting and exciting read!
