A lovely, sad, funny follow-up to Fuller's incredible Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, a memoir of growing up during the chaotic end of white Rhodesia. This time she focuses on her mother. In the first book mom was depicted as fairly insane, whereas in this book Fuller gives a more complete picture, and readers can begin to feel sympathy for this singular woman. Don't read this first! Must read Don't Let's Go to understand.

This was a really good memoir of a very interesting family. I enjoyed to read about what their lives were like in several parts of Africa, and the ups and downs of what they experienced throughout the conflicts taking place around them. It is a poignant slice-of-life memoir that should be read by anyone wanting to learn more about life in Africa.

Marvelous book! Fun and funny, yet also sad and sweet as only Alexandra Fuller can make a book.
"There we go then," Mum said, "I'll just get my Uzi and we'll be off...."
"Bullets, lipstick, sunglasses. Off we go...." (p. 28-29).
She is just the BEST writer! Her family..........makes mine look good. This one is surpassing my expectations handily. ...more
