On the throne is Kreon, brother of the late Queen Jocasta, their mother. He is a military man who demands complete obedience from his subjects, who know his punishments are severe. When he declares that the body of his nephew Polyneices will remain unburied due to his unworthiness, it forces Antigone to break the law and openly challenge Kreon.
