This was a beautifully written novel about Sierra Leone after their decade Civil War (1991 - 2002), flashbacks to when the rebels ruled the land, and the atrocities that the average civilians had to endure.
I thought the writing was beautiful but the plot and character development left a little to be desired. I started off really intrigued by Adrian and then got bored. By the end I found him whiney. I liked Kai but it took me awhile to warm up to him. And with Cole, I didn't understand from the narative of his youth how he became the man he was when he was dying.
