I recommend anyone who wants to get into this book watch an adaptation first, particularly the famous BBC miniseries with Colin Firth. Then read this, and be patient, and keep that adaptation in mind.
Because Austen's a great satirist, she pretty much originated the romantic comedy, and her female characters aren't just remarkable for their time, they're remarkable period. I read the shorter version of this book so I think it might be unfair to judge it. I'm sure the full version would have been more meticulous and would give me a better sense of Jane Austen's writing. However, even based solely on the plot, this book didn't blow my mind like I thought it would. Maybe because it was so hyped I expected so much more out of it. For the time period it was written in though, it was pleasing and fun to read.

Finally...had to read this book, as it's my wife's favorite-of-all-time book and DVD series. It was OK. Maybe I need to read it a few more times...
