I have to have some books on a regular basis that are just for fun, but also have merit, either exceptional writing, a clever premise, and in the case of The Eyre Affair, a good romp through literary references with a wink and a nod.
Fforde is so much fun. I didn't have to have at my side: Wikipedia, or The Cambridge History of English and American Literature, or Bartleby's, the last two of which I have only a passing acquaintance. Some of my literary experience is lost in the mists of early educ

I was disappointed by this book. I wanted to love it and I did like the Douglas Adams-style irreverence and absurdity and the idea of being able to jump into classic novels, but as a whole, it didn't grip me. I didn't feel a strong pull towards any of the main characters, despite wanting to like and identify with Thursday Next. ...more
