Personally, I don’t “enjoy” Greene ‘s style, but his novels seem to strike at the heart of human nature. How does a modern man, in this case a priest of mediocre talents who is addicted to alcohol, react to a brutal state that seeks to use him as a symbolic sacrifice? In rural Mexico, the state government has outlawed religion, destroyed churches and executed or exiled priests.
