As other readers have mentioned I was drawn into this book after reading the first chapter but also felt that at times the story dragged a little. But, I am glad that I read this story.
It was interesting to read this story as it is told from the pov of the photo-journalists who were each there for their own personal reasons and all were not good for the war effort or the people of Vietnam.
I thought the author did a good job of having Vietnam itself be a character in the story.

I read this while visiting Vietnam and found it so thoughtful and moving. The war is described brutally but she also acknowledges the exhilaration of living in extreme times. The book is really about war photography. The love story is centered around the particular emotions and compromises of being a witness to atrocities and choosing to record them rather than attempt to intervene. A great read about a female photographer in Vietnam. Nice to have a female perspective on the war. I enjoyed this book since I have traveled to many of the places mentioned and it gave me a new percpective.
A compelling look at the challenges of documenting a war zone, but the heavy-handed romantic angle bogs down a story that's capable of better. I find Helen's emotional engagement with Vietnam and its culture to be the more interesting love story.
