I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that more thoroughly encapsulated the insanity that is war.
William Rivers is a psychiatrist who’s job is to treat WW1 soldiers who have had a breakdown, with the hope of stabilizing them so that they can return to the fighting in France. These young men have experienced such horror that they have stopped being able to speak or walk or eat or sleep. They wake, screaming, from unimaginable nightmares.
