This book is totally intimidating at first glance, but after a long reading which involved breaks and affairs with other novels, I finally finished it and it was worth the effort. It's totally rewarding in the end and wonderfully written. I just wish that Bolano was still around to give us another masterpiece.

It took me over a year to read this book. The first part grabbed me immediately and I read it voraciously. Each part was very different, however, so I often took breaks between them. I took a particularly long break during the fourth part, which I found to be a particularly difficult slog. The fourth part was monotonous and painful (in multiple senses of the word) to read, but I appreciated and understood the purpose behind what Bolano was doing in that section. I think I just wasn't in the right mindframe for this - so huge, so sprawling, so utterly without editing that it just never coalesced as a coherent story.
