I was all set to rate this 4 stars until very close to the end.

Not an unpleasant read, this Swedish mystery. The story's about a woman whose childhood friend turns up dead in a bathtub in frozen house in winter. I guess the most interesting part about it is the Swedish fishing town in winter and its atmosphere. The characters are fine, if sometimes randomly introduced. I like the main character, Erika, and the fact that she's a writer.

Engaging and well-paced, but a marked departure from the usual tone of Scandinavian crime fiction. There's grim stuff here, but there's an overt sense of hopefulness and cheer that adds some much-needed levity to what can often be a dreary sub-genre.
