Second instalment in the saga of time-traveller Claire and her husband Jamie. A much more credible plot that the first one and many loose ends were tied up. Compelling and entertaining, a brilliant holiday read. I’m intrigued as to how this story will continue.

I absolutely love this series and am officially addicted to Claire and Jamie and their Scottish adventures. So much fun between the pages of a book.

Instead of picking up right where Outlander left off the book begins in 1968 with Claire and her daughter Brianna traveling to Scotland. About a hundred pages in the narrative returns to Claire and Jamie in France, trying to find a way to stop the Scottish uprising of 1745 and the slaughter of Culloden. Then proceeds three hundred pages or so of sheer tedium while Claire and Jamie conduct political intrigue by attending lots of parties. Shelves: historical, scotland, speculative-fiction, romantic

Gets a bit draggy around page 500 or so, but the characters are still boldly drawn and vivid (if not entirely believable). The historical detail is exhaustively researched, and it serves Gabaldon well here.
