I've long considered Dr. Zhivago my favorite movie, so I went into the book hoping for a depth that movies usually aren't able to provide. In the book, Pasternak's women appear simple, two dimensional and their behavior is highly discordant with today's expectations from what are seen as strong women. The movie presents Lara as much more lovable and interesting than the book, as well as Tanya.
