Eh gads - a time when unbecoming behavior was such a big deal. A slowly unfolding story of a young woman, Lucy Honeychurch, traveling through Italy (with a chaperone, of course) who encounters an unconventional and socially unacceptable father and son. I decided to read this book for the wrong reasons (our upcoming trip to Italy and my incessant need to immerse myself in all things Italian) but by the time I'd finished reading the first page, marveling at the beauty of Forster's writing, I knew I'd found a new addition to my list of Books You Must Read.

I expected this book to be better than it was, and I'm not sure why. I knew the story, the Victorian setting, the society of the time period, but I still think the whole symbolism of the 'room with a view' was a bit too subtle, especially for teen readers. (This book is on the reading lists at our high school, and I think many students would have trouble 'getting' it.)
