This quasi-thriller is a tough one to evaluate -- on the one hand, I found it entirely readable and even engrossing at times, but the moment one really starts to think about the characters, it's absurd. One protagonist is a woman who grew up in an American circus, married a Pakistani man from a prominent family, disguised herself as a boy to travel across Soviet Central Asia with a Sufi mystic/storytelling, then to Mecca, picking up an encyclopedic knowledge of the Quran and hadiths, wrote books

Michael Gruber's "Good Son" is essentially classified as belonging to the mystery/suspense/thriller genre. It is after all about a kidnapping and a secret rescue mission. However it is much more than that! I can't believe how anyone can write such a novel - it simply defies being classified.
