What Members Thought

I started The English Patient once, and never really understood the fuss, but this is beautiful. Sad, as one would expect from a book about a forensic anthropologist set during a civil war. But beautiful. A lot of different threads and stories and people woven together, and still a lot of questions left hanging at the end.

A beautiful book that broke my heart. Forensic pathologist Anil returns to her native country of Sri Lanka after more than a decade away. She is sent by an international NGO and paired with Sarath, a host national archaeologist to investigate grave sites but one of the skeletons is more recently deceased, perhaps at the hands of the government. They name the skeleton Sailor and seek to learn his fate.

I wasn't a huge fan, but at least it was a fast read...
The description of the novel did not jive with the tale itself. I kept waiting for the truth to be revealed and yet it never happened. I felt no closure at the end. ...more

Another forensic anthropologist, this time fictional. Her story- with her return to her country of birth, her previous relationship with a married man, and her almost losing everything in her search for the truth about Sailor is interwoven with those with whom she works and their histories. Beautifully written, as you would expect from this author, but not brain candy floss (my term for light reading).
