Mengiste does a fantastic job, through rather artful storytelling, in educating her readers about Ethiopia through references to the Italian occupation, ancient belief systems, and the modernization of Ethiopia, all of which culminates and is highlighted through the trials and tribulations of a presumably upper middle-class Ethiopian family living in a tight-knit and ideologically diverse community as they struggle to survive a revolution-turned-civil war. This book was interesting to me as I moved to Ethiopia right after the Derg was overthrown. Reading about the beginning of their move to power helped me to put things in perspective.
