I certainly never expected to encounter among the Newberys a book of historical fiction where the main character meets Jesus!

I wasn't really looking forward to reading this 1962 Newbery medal winner. All I knew about it was that it was about a boy living during the times of Jesus and it had an unappealing cover. I was pleasantly surprised by the book.
