This is a tragedy. The main tragedy was that Emma was incapable of experiencing contentment. She always wanted something else. Usually what she wanted wasn't good for her. The turmoil she caused was mostly within herself though it also reached out to harm the lives of others.

I could identify with Emma's terror at having financial stress. Her solutions to all problems were wrong. (view spoiler)

Bovary is the original bored housewife. Motherhood is a burden, religion a brief distraction. In an effort to make her life as she feels it should be, she spends lavishly on clothes and her home. She has two disappointing affairs. Heartbroken and broke, she takes drastic action with tragic results.
