I think this is a perfect novel. That doesn't mean it's the best. Flaubert seems to approach novel writing like math. It's elements are all balanced out, everything fits together, even the "heart" of it. And for some reason this level of calculation undercuts my enjoyment. Does that make sense?

What I remembered of "Madame Bovary", from my first reading some 20 years, was the plight of a passionate woman in nineteenth-century France. I'd been left with deep sympathy for Emma in her vain attempts to shed the shackles of society in search for happiness and love.
