Although this is the third of the Erast Fandorin series to be translated and published in English, it is actually the second chronologically. It takes place in 1877, immediately following the events of The Winter Queen. The story opens with a progressive young woman travelling to Bulgaria to rendezvous with her fiance, who is with the Russian Army, fighting the Ottoman Empire. Akunin's perspective is an interesting one - he mixes up his series by presenting his protagonist solely through the eyes of other characters, and he executes the conceit very well.
