Set in Vienna, Austria at the turn of the 20th century. Max Liebermann, a Psychoanalyst and his friend Oskar Rheinhardt, a policeman are faced with an "impossible" murder that must be solved.
I really liked the setting for this book: Vienna during the waning of it's golden era, filled with music, art and literature, yet the rise of medicine, science, fascism and anti-semitism. I loved that Freud and Mahler made an appearance. I definitely plan on reading more of Mr. Tallis' books. ...more

This book was an interesting look at Viennese culture at the time of great cultural and artistic change. A woman is found murdered in a locked room, no exit or entry explainable. She has been shot through the heart, but no bullet has exited the body nor remains to be found. A lot of characters to keep track of but a nice portrait of 1902 Vienna and its inhabitants. If this is a series, I'd read more of it.
