Set in Vienna, Austria at the turn of the 20th century. Max Liebermann, a Psychoanalyst and his friend Oskar Rheinhardt, a policeman are faced with an "impossible" murder that must be solved.
I really liked the setting for this book: Vienna during the waning of it's golden era, filled with music, art and literature, yet the rise of medicine, science, fascism and anti-semitism. I loved that Freud and Mahler made an appearance. I definitely plan on reading more of Mr. Tallis' books. ...more

This book was an interesting look at Viennese culture at the time of great cultural and artistic change. A woman is found murdered in a locked room, no exit or entry explainable. She has been shot through the heart, but no bullet has exited the body nor remains to be found. The police detective discovers the body of a woman who led seances and claimed to connect Viennese with spirits. Puzzled, Oskar Reinhardt turns to his friend, Dr. Max Liebermann, for advice. A lot of characters to keep track of but a nice portrait of 1902 Vienna and its inhabitants. If this is a series, I'd read more of it.
