Every time I read this novel, a new layer of its brilliance slowly revealsa itself to me. Truly a masterful and terrifying glimpse at man's humanity to man when confronted with the absence of the pillars of society.

So dark, so heartbreaking, so thought-provoking...I was so disturbed after reading this, and yet I was never once surprised by the storyline, or the inescapably sad truth that humans are capable of such cruelty. It parallels so many "unspeakable acts" that we hear about all the time, but the shock value of this novel isn't that they are children, but that their behavior is such that occurs among society, perhaps more often than we realize, or admit.

I hated this book when I had to read it in 8th grade. It was so savage! However, I taught this book to my 10th graders last year, and I loved it! It was so savage!!! I like that the story can be read on multiple levels, depending on how deeply you want to dig.
I guess this is on my list of forced political books for highschoolers....
