This was much more intense than I thought it would be! I was thinking "Chocolat." But, light is completely inappropriate for this book. It's set during the German occupation of France during WWII, which is the first indication this was going to be serious. It ended up being a great book though. The main characters were exquisitely drawn and the various relationships were complicated but endearingly human. I liked the fishing "wisdom" and the unbelievable food descriptions!

If there were 10 stars I'd choose them all for this book. I loved it ... Joanne Harris (she wrote Chocolat) has become one of my very favorite writers! She takes you on a journey that holds you captive until the very end. ...more
