This is a novel about British imperialism in India c.1920 more or less - the British Raj (their rule in India) lasted from 1858 to 1947.
The main characters are Dr. Aziz, a Muslim doctor of Indian descent and his friend Cyril Fielding, the English principal of a college established for training Indians. Dr. Aziz makes great efforts to try to be friendly to the English though some are unfriendly to him. He is excluded from their high society enclaves.

Beautiful story. Forster explores the interaction between people of similarity and between people of difference with a rare insight. He uses dialogue rather than long description to develop his characters and plot. He sneaks in short, beautiful descriptions of the landscape, however, making his style very pleasant to read. The story is intriguing to say the least, as Forster gives us so much to enjoy throughout the course of the novel. He does it, however, without writing for pages on end. I fou
