My thoughts on this book are not uncomplicated and are more dependent on when you asked me for said opinions than 85% of books I read, which are much more straight-forward.
When I picked up this book, it was my third attempt of the night to read something. The other two I put down before reaching the end of the first chapter, but Mistress Of Nothing captured my interest before the first page was through.

Normally things that Just.Would.Not.Happen.put me off, but this one pulled me in. In a culture/country where an unmarried woman who dared sleep with a man would get her stoned to death (and, this is after all set more than a century ago in Victorian/Edwardian-era Egypt)the story of an English ladies' maid and her expatriate life in Egypt with her TB-suffering mistress was too compelling, too tastefully written to toss aside. Beautiful, heartfelt story slowly unfolding as, like Egypt itself, the heat builds. This is a period piece, reflecting a bygone era where women has so few choices. Powerful and perceptive in it's treatment of choices and the outcomes that follow.
