It's easy to see how this story gripped the nation in 1945, because it's still pretty darn riveting more than 60 years later. Zuckoff in many ways is smart enough to simply get out of the way of the story and let it unfold, but his use of small details is especially effective in emphasizing the narrative punch. A must for WWII history junkies, survival story enthusiasts, and anyone who's inspired by seeing what human beings are made of when the chips are down. ...more

I could not put this book down. A wonderful adventure story with so many interesting characters. And of course they DO get rescued in the end.
