So many of Steinbeck's books seem so bleak but offer a glimmer of hope or the strength of human spirit. The Joads persevere even in times of unimaginable hardship; Adam Trask soldiers on despite his treatment by Cathy; Mac and the boys are poor but happy. But this book is just depressing.
