As I mentioned in my review of Norwegian Wood, it was RM of BTS fame who inspired me to start reading Murakami and I picked NW from a list of books that RM recommended. After finishing Norwegian Wood, I looked at the list again and decided to deep end it and chose this as my next Murakami read. Kafka on the Shore is typical Murakami: surrealism, fate, coming of age, music, literary references to Greek tragedies, all the aspects that we have come to expect. How do I describe this? The author is an incredible writer, the story is fascinating, but oh, so weird. The title feels like it should be Oedipus instead of Kafka. It's only after I finished the book and put it down that I realized I'd just read a story about a boy who slept with his mom. During the story, it seems as normal as anything else (and yeah, the whole book is rather odd).
