As I make my way through Kincaid's books in chronological order and read a little bit about her, I came to this fourth one very aware of her fiction's highly autobiographical nature, along with a pretty clear sense that she has been grappling with mommy issues her whole life. And while this book's title appears to clearly signpost those twin aspects of her work, it's not quite so simple or direct. I found this very difficult to read and get into - it took me 5 months to finish it! It was poetic, and lyrical, and nonlinear, and convoluted. I wanted to like it more than I did, mostly because the main character was so unique and powerful.
