I went off with City of Z explorer Percy Fawcett across the Amazon jungle over spring break. You can learn a lot about South American history by reading this book, at least, as far as exploration of it during the 20th century. The Amazon is an inhospitable region that obsessed explorers have been attracted to for over a century. Many of the explorers died or went missing and Percy Harrison Fawcett was perhaps the most famous among them. He worked with the British Royal Geographical Society to ostensibly map the Amazon and other regions. He may also have worked as a spy.
