Beautifully written story of three people from different classes/backgrounds during the Civil war in Nigeria in the late 60's. I learned a lot about that time in Nigeria, but we all thought how universal these issues have become in our world: peoples of a country fighting each other over issues of land, ideology and religion. It was heartbreaking to see the personal damage this war did to families we got to know in the novel. Also i read that this was the first televised humanitarian crisis, and ...more

I'd give the book 3.5 stars if I could.

I found the history and the story of the war interesting and worthwhile. The personal stories, not so much. The characters never seemed real to me and some of their decisions and behavior never made sense.

Easily one of my new favorite books. I don’t think I’ll ever stop praising the imagery, symbolism, and humanity (sometimes lack thereof) portrayed by Adichie.
