I've read this book so many time the cover is falling off. It's historical pulp at its best. Set in ancient Egypt, this story of love and war is told from the point of view of the unforgettable eunuch Taita. Rarely have I come across such an alive, memorable character. I do not recommend other books by Wilbur Smith, but this one is just the right mix of history, romance, gore, and intrigue that brings ancient Egypt alive. ...more

After the disappointment of The Silence of the Girls, I'm glad to read via the POV of a slave who's more like a real person who finds ways to have agency, including their thoughts and opinions. The descriptions are vivid but sometimes a bit much during violent graphic scenes. ...more
