This book started out great! I loved the setting and the description of the town. I really liked the characters and the descriptions of the rituals. Much of the folklore (which I always love in stories) was just fabulous and the holidays and much of the dialog reminded me so much of my own German grandma. The town itself became a character on its own.

This is actually pretty scary at times.
The most appealing part of the book is its setting, a real-life, fairy tale village in Germany, Bad Münstereifel. I looked for images of it so I could picture it while I was reading.

Absolutely gripping and so well written. Although in many ways this book is a horror story, it's also much more complex. There are stories within the story, and a loving portrayal of German village life. Not to mention the rather sad subplot of family life. A very skilled writer. ...more
