Very dark and depressing novel but incredible writing.

Liam kills himself by drowning. His sister's way of dealing with this is the topic of this book. The two shared a secret from childhood which had severe effects on both their lives. This secret of betrayal and redemption is outlined throughout three centuries in this book.

I was frustrated with the protagonist who seemed to surrender too much of her will to the past, but Enright's writing is beautifully subtle.

Every single sentence in this novel is potent and beautiful. It starts out quietly and builds with fervor as Veronica, the protagonist, tells her story. The story: it's not only her own. She is one of a family of 12 children, in the middle-ish.
She says there is privacy in large families.
It's an intricate revealing of things kept secret or forgotten by family. And of a woman kind of losing herself.
