Robinson Crusoe in Around the World in 80 Books

Robinson Crusoe has been on my "guilt" stack for the longest time. Part of the problem was finding a truly unabridged version. I finally secured one, but that was at least 10 years ago. It took a pandemic, with its (ironically) attendant abundance of time for me to finally sit down a plow through this epic book. And it is epic. The Hollywood version tells Crusoe's story in a much abbreviated form. The ship-wreck, the island, the gathering of knowledge and resources, his man Friday, etc.

The much Robinson Crusoe has been on my "guilt" stack for the longest time. Part of the problem was finding a truly unabridged version. I finally secured one, but that was at least 10 years ago. It took a pandemic, with its (ironically) attendant abundance of time for me to finally sit down a plow through this epic book. And it is epic. The Hollywood version tells Crusoe's story in a much abbreviated form. The ship-wreck, the island, the gathering of knowledge and resources, his man Friday, etc.

The much longer version is the preferable one. It begins with a young (18) and callow "Rob" spurring his father's advice to stick to the "middle path" in life, and stay close to home. (An older brother was lost in the British-Spanish fighting around Dunkirk). But Rob, like his older brother, seeks adventure and his own path. He soon secures himself a position on a ship. Rob immediately experiences a bad storm (but not THE storm), and is left with the grudging suspicion that the sailor's life is not a lucky one for him. Nevertheless, he tries again, and eventually finds himself a prisoner-slave to some Barbary pirates for a few years.

Crusoe bides his time (and he becomes very good at this, wherever he goes), and waits for an opportunity to escape. It eventually comes, he steals a ship from his master, has some adventures on the north coast of Africa, until he's eventually saved by a Portuguese ship. In time he comes something of a minor businessman (and a good one). He establishes himself in the "Brazils" as a plantation owner, and does well for himself. At this point Crusoe, along with some other partners, decide to invest in slaves (and Defoe does seem, throughout the novel, chilly toward that practice) in order to make more money. Crusoe is designated as the group's representative to Africa to effect this slave acquisition. He doesn't get far, since the REAL storm, the one you've been waiting for for about 60 pages finally occurs, and Crusoe has at last found his island.

When you think about it, Defoe actually packs a lot of story in those first 60 pages. Those pages also provide Crusoe with some much-needed seasoning and survival training before he is even shipwrecked. Once on the island, things slow down (for about 150 pages or so) as Crusoe methodically, often through trial-and-error, adjusts to his new environment. A series of chapters rooted in his Journal spells out these various moments or lessons. At one point Crusoe becomes quite ill, and has a weird and powerful vision of a man (Jesus?) descending from a "great black cloud." From this moment onward, Crusoe becomes quite religious, reading his Bible daily, and meditating on it and the meaning of his existence. This sounds heavy, but it isn't. If anything, all of this deep thinking tempers his future actions when it comes to the arrival of (the very brutal) cannibals, Friday, mutineers, and other adventures (which include -- surprisingly -- battles in the snow with hundreds of wolves and a bear). Embedded within these adventures are real and thoughtful meditations regarding the right-to-kill, evil, justice, Providence, and the mysterious nature of God, Once you get past Defoe's sometimes archaic language and his always carefully wrought sentences, you can see why Robinson ("Rob) Crusoe, particularly the unabridged one, is one of great beloved characters in all of Literature.

Il primo libro che ho letto da ragazzo e per intero. L'ho riletto e devo dire che ad ogni rilettura è sempre una nuova esperienza.

Robinson Crusoe di Daniel Defoe è un romanzo classico che affascina e ispira da oltre tre secoli. Per molti lettori, compreso me, è stato il primo libro che abbiamo letto per intero, aprendo le porte a un mondo di avventure senza fine e riflessioni profonde.
