What Members Thought

A brilliant and capitivating opening. After Part One, however, the book becomes a bit disjointed and comes to an abrupt ending. Nevertheless, McEwan does an excellent job of setting a scene and is amazing at getting into the minds of his characters. He provides a vivid and necessarily disturbing portrait of the effects of warfare, both in the field and at home.

I'll admit that I hesitated to read this because I wasn't exactly wowed by Amsterdam, but Atonement is a masterpiece. I'm interested to see the movie, because the broad elements of the plot are actually pretty cliched - everything that is great about this book is in the subtleties of how the story is told.

Loved the movie, bought the book. Disappointed and didn't think the book did the story justice.
