I started reading this for a book club and threw it away after the first part because I didn't care for the explicit sexual content / language. I don't think of myself as being overly prudish, but when inappropriate language is used unnecessarily (it seemed incongruous and unrealistic), I lose respect for the author and his craft. If the author is going to take risks with that kind of language, it better be to the purpose.* I didn't find it was.

Interesting when an author, within the book, suggests that they are making up the story.

This was a very interesting book about psychology, actions, and consequences. It starts off with a story of a young girl Briony and her sister. Briony witnesses her sister's flirtation with a young man, and mistakes it for something else. She wants to protect her sister however she can, so she "commits a crime". The rest is for you to find out! The majority of teh book takes place during world war 2, so we also get to hear some of the soldiers' experiences ...more

I really liked the the first and last sections of this book a lot. The writing in those sections was engaging and seemed to perfectly portray all the thoughts that can go through one's head in a few seconds. However, I found the middle section of the book to be really dull, and all the descriptions of the war just didn't hold my interest. ...more

Listened to this as an audiobook while crafting. It was perfect for that. Held my interest, but didn't require extreme concentration. Enjoyed some of the author's metaphors and descriptions. The ending was anti-climactic and left me feeling cheated. Since it was only 6 hours long, however, it was worth the time. ...more
