After reading (and not really enjoying My Name Is Red), I wanted to give Pamuk another chance as I was spending some time in Turkey this summer. At first, I really enjoyed the book and how the town of Kars and its citizens we're introduced. I found the tensions between fanaticism and nationalism, religion and atheism, alien Westerner and impoverished native very intriguing. Dense, but good (which is my review of everything I borrow from my Reno relatives). I feel like Pamuk is the author everyone reads when they Want to Read a Book About Turkey, which makes me think I should read a few more things before feeling like I know anything.
I found this book easy to put down. It was a good read, but a slow read.
