While this is supposed to be a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Marillier has really made the story her own, and the links are quite sophisticated and creepy. The romance between Caitrin and Anluan (the curs'd chieftain of Whistling Tor, who suffered from palsy as a child) is sensual and moving; the obsidian mirror through which Caitrin seeks an understanding of the evil that plagues the place is terrifying; the members of the host - unlikely friends and comrades - wield, against all odds, a c

When I started this, I thought it seemed weaker than Marillier's other work, but as I got deeper into the story, I decided it was more sophisticated. I'll admit I got choked up at a few parts, which is unusual for me.
