Astrid is suffering. Veronika is suffering. Against all odds, they meet and become friends. The friendship heals both of them.

So much silence. (I wrote that before I'd finished.)
Astrid and Veronika are pretty much each other coming from different generations and eras.
A lovely story. In another mood I might call it sentimental but I fell into this easily, willingly, and really liked it. It deals with memory, past, future, love, loss, grief, saving each other and oneself, friendship... quietly. It's a tidy story about two women and how they open up. Four stars? Five stars? Lovely short novel about love, tragedy and the healing power of friendship when all hope seems gone. Beautifully realized characters and setting. Olsson's simple yet powerful voicemakes this a wonderful little gem.
