This book contains a novella and a short story, both dealing with the death of a loved one. Although I wouldn't say that Yoshimoto has a beautiful style, I do like her stories. ...more

Banana is eloquent at writing about loss but the references to transwomen could be phrased better.
Moonlight Shadow was sparse and much better.

After completing this novella, I was reminded of the adage that great things come in small packages. A small novella but packed with load of emotion ranging from love, tragedy, grief, humor and much more. It is story of mothers and ( even a transsexual one)daughters, sons and their love for each other. Mikada after the death of her grandmother finds herself alone in the world. It seems odd to say that a book about grief and despair is charming, but this is. I think it's the youthful voice and the sparse prose, but Yoshimoto doesn't pull her punches for all that. ...more
