So, you are wondering why I didn't rate this book. Well, I didn't enjoy all of it. Yes, there were some passages that were amazing, particularly in the last chapter where we hear Stephen's more mature thoughts, and he expounds on Aristotle, Plato, and Horace.
I believe I need to read the book a few more times before I will appreciate more.

Started reading Joyce's book Ulysses as one of my goals this year is to try to read through the list of the Modern Library's 100 best novels of the 20th Century. Ulysses is the first book on the list, but I thought it wise to first finish book #3 on the list, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, as the main character (Stephen Dedalus) is also a primary character is Ulysses.

No doubt it is a really well written book. I probably would have enjoyed reading this in a literature class; as it is, I read it in the middle of summer. The descriptive passages were awesome but there wasn't enough of a plot to keep me interested.
