I have mixed feelings on this. It's a bunch of great character sketches tied together by the device of having them all work for an international paper; not very plotty, although you can see how it all works to describe the decline and fall. One of my least favorite tropes, though, is the one that says: "This is all they all end up," and proceeds to give a sentence or two in order to imbue the resolution with a lot more gravitas than it otherwise would have had. Rachman has a gift for creating intriguing characters, even when he only gives himself a small space to sketch them out. Definitely not plot-driven in theme, but the pace feels that way.
