What Members Thought
Not a book that makes me want to go and visit Finland. Seriously between the detailed descriptions of how dark, cold, and unfriendly place it is and the locals that are all portrayed as constantly drunk and prone to mental illneses, why would anyone want to go there? This is part of my Scandinavian mystery kick, and I have to say that I see a common tread in all these books: they are all pretty graphic in their descriptions, they all inform us of the rampant crime afflicting the Scandinavian cou

Good Nordic noir: Murder, drunkedness, sexual deviance, all set within the arctic circle.
I'm not sure that I entirely buy the convolutions of the mystery, but Thompson's insights into Finnish life are much more compelling. Vaara's voice definitely comes across more American than Finnish, but the small ways in which his culture clashes with that of his wife Kate are what make this a series to watch.
